Backwater Valves
A backwater valve (BWV) is a mechanical device installed on your home’s main sewer line. Its purpose is to protect your home from flooding caused by city sewer backups. Heavy rainfall or blockages in the municipal sewer system can force raw sewage back into your home—resulting in costly and devastating damage.
A BWV contains an internal flapper that automatically floats up and seals the sewer line when a back surge occurs, preventing sewage from entering your home. The typical installation location is at the front of the basement, where the sewer line exits the house. This placement allows the valve to protect your entire plumbing system.
Installing a backwater valve is highly recommended. While having work done in your basement for a day may be a minor inconvenience, it’s far less disruptive—and far less expensive—than tearing out your basement after a sewage flood.
